The Master of Creative Writing is designed to extend and challenge emerging writers to hone their craft in a small community of writers. The focus is on developing your creativity and writing skills, and to provide expert training if you are aiming for professional publication. You are encouraged to experiment, hone your craft and to develop a technical vocabulary for critiquing your own work and the work of others. Specialist units in the degree engage with novel and short story writing, creative nonfiction (such as memoir, writing about place, personal essay), poetry, writing for young adults and manuscript development.

Master of Creative Writing

Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.This course offers students the opportunity to study one or two disciplines from a wide range of majors. Students choosing only one major will also choose the elective stream where they will be able to choose further units from the same discipline as their chosen major or may choose units from throughout the university. The first year of the course enables students to choose foundation units suitable to their needs and begin study in their chosen major(s), where appropriate.

Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing) (Professional Writing and Publishing)

This program offers postgraduate training in writing as a preparation for creative and professional practice and/or advanced study. You will hone your writing skills for work as a creative writer, social commentator or narrative journalist and for careers in speech writing, public advocacy, information and media communication.You will gain certified expertise in the theory and practice of creative writing and be introduced to the intersection between writing and information publishing industries. You will develop the techniques of creative and professional written expression, learn concepts and methods in creative research and gain the foundations for advanced study in writing and related fields.

Whether you’re keen on a writing career or looking to scratch a creative itch, you’ll get an overview of the writing and information publishing industries. Build a basis for work in journalism, speech writing, public advocacy, and communications.

Graduate Certificate in Creative and Professional Writing

The Undergraduate Certificate in Creative Writing is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in Creative Writing. The Undergraduate Certificate may give student entry (and credit for the four units completed) into the Creative Writing major within the Bachelor of Arts program offered by Curtin through Open Universities Australia or the equivalent internal course, among others at Curtin and Curtin OUA.

Your introduction to creative writing at university level, and a pathway towards further study. Explore the writing process and get to know genres and forms, putting pen to paper as your write short fiction and graduating with a collection of your own.

Undergraduate Certificate in Creative Writing

This is a course for students who are new to their chosen major area of study. It is designed to allow students to develop and apply advanced skills and understandings of contemporary practices in their field while developing and extending their critical, analytical, and creative knowledges and experiences through interdisciplinary engagement with allied fields of media, creative arts, and social inquiry. Students will develop specialist practical and professional skills orientated towards professional or creative engagement in fields of their chosen major. They will also gain analytical, collaborative, and problem-solving skills through the critically informed practice of designing, planning, and producing a major project in the form of a creative production, portfolio work, report, or thesis. The course also provides opportunities for students to take internships in their respective fields and to demonstrate qualification for possible entry into Curtin University’s PhD program.The Professional Writing and Publishing (PWP) Major will equip students with the skills, understanding and discipline to work in corporate communications and media in state, federal and local government, business and industry, the not-for-profit sector, arts organisations, and the magazine and book industries. These areas continue to demonstrate a significant growth nationally and internationally. It is expected that the degree will attract students with a strong command of the English language from a range of undergraduate disciplines from not only Humanities but also science and health sciences. Students will learn to convey information, issues and debate to colleagues, clients, constituents, and stake-holders by creating narratives that are rhetorically effective, ethically aware, well-researched, and cogently argued, in a range of media, genres and forms including print and online media, features and profiles, speeches, reports, discussion papers, narrative nonfiction, and promotion writing. Uniquely, the Curtin PWP program integrates creative practice and academic inquiry with training and experience in real-world technical and professional skills and competencies. It aims to foster its students’ narrative nonfiction writing talents, developing their skills in storytelling whilst training them in the specialised genres and conventions of professional communication and delivering advanced instruction in research, writing, editing and publishing. This equips students to contribute to and influence public discourse which is increasingly being driven by narrative: stories that capture an organisation’s identity, aspirations, and endeavours. Students will undertake a major project in their second year of study. They will also have an opportunity to practice their skills and develop their portfolio through internship with a professional organization. Students with outstanding results will have an option to further strengthen their critical capacity in preparation for possible PhD study.

The Undergraduate Professional Writing and Publishing is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in Professional Writing and Publishing. The Undergraduate Certificate may enable entry (and credit for the four units completed) into the Professional Writing and Publishing major within the Bachelor of Arts among others at Curtin OUA.

The Creative Writing Major encourages experimentation and creativity and stimulates critical awareness through discussion of relevant theory, and engagement with digital technologies.

Graduate Diploma in Arts (Creative Writing)

Students entering university can feel overwhelmed by how much reading they need to complete before synthesising and translating this information into their own written work. How can you read efficiently, for understanding and analysis? How do you transform what you have read into your own original writing that is clear and persuasive? In this unit you will learn how to read for information, understanding, and critique. You will be introduced to four techniques of reading: inspectional, analytical, syntopical, and close reading. You will then learn techniques of thesis-driven composition and improve your understanding of the ways in which sentences, paragraphs, and arguments are structured. Learn how to use others’ ideas to strengthen your claims without compromising your own voice as a writer.

Techniques in Academic Reading and Writing

This unit introduces students to long-form narrative writing in the genre of the novel and novella. Students apply their previous learning of narrative writing technique and craft to the creation and planning of a new work, focusing on creativity and inspiration, research and planning, drafting the plot outline, developing characters, and building the story-world. Students read and discuss novels and novellas from different genres, and engage in intensive writing practice each week, completing exercises that help them to develop the bones of their novel or novella. Students are also introduced to current industry practices and conditions. At the conclusion of this unit students will have produced the opening to a novel or novella, and a book proposal including a synopsis an outline of the work.

Novel and Novella Writing

This subject was previously known as Writing, Rhetoric and Persuasion.This subject introduces students to foundational skills in professional writing. This subject was previously known as Introduction to Writing.This subject explores representation in writing and how the dynamic relationship between Self and Other plays a central role in the writing process. The representation of the self and of others is central to a broad range of written genres and forms. Experimental Writing

This unit explores commercially popular fiction and genre fiction in the marketplace today. We begin by analysing the form and features of bestselling novels as well as mass-market genre fiction such as fantasy, science-fiction, suspense/thriller/horror, crime, and romance. We examine how generic forms crossover with each other, and how digital publishing enables the proliferation of hybrid genres and niche subgenres within the popular fiction market. Students learn how to identify different types of research fields that are relevant to their genre of interest, and to integrate this research into their creative writing in practical ways. There will be a particular focus on world-building, characterisation, and the development of character-driven plots.
